TINA DAVIES' SOLO SHOW, 2023

Art 5 Gallery proudly presents Tina Davies’ Solo Show, an exhibition of new paintings and ceramics by the Brighton-based artist. The artist brings together a collection of brand-new paintings and ceramic works which will be on display from March 25th to April 2nd.

If we need to describe Artist Tina Davies in two words, these two words would definitely have to be: Free Spirit.

Tina embraces spontaneity, rejects conformity, and definitely goes with the flow.

Tina has been with our gallery since 2006. She was the very first artist we met when we purchased Art 5, many years ago and I can still remember when she came in the gallery to meet us. The gallery was still in 5 Bartholomews, just a couple of blocks from where we are right now.  I distinctly remember how refreshing and authentic Tina was on our first meeting.

Tina started showing her art with Art5 after she entered a competition of Artist of the Year in 2006 and came in among the first three positions. Since then, she has been represented by our Gallery.

Tina Davies has trained as a potter in the Lake District, England and then went on to Antigua in the Caribbean. She continued her studies for two years in Art and Design back in England and finally completed a Ceramics degree in Cardiff, Wales.

Tina’s interests became directed towards nature where she painted the human figure and floral subjects onto clay. At this time, she also discovered her passion for painting with her hands.

Tina works from the heart looking to achieve ‘no mind’. She is passionate to create and often moves around diverse materials, oils, ink, clay, etc., therefore forming no patterns, no rules. The artist paints with her hands creating a closer relationship to the subject and medium allowing herself to flow with the experience of the process itself.

Tina’s art is dynamic. She loves nature and you can see it in her work. She tells us that the excitement of spring, the heat of the summer, the transformation of autumn and the stillness of winter are all represented in her works. Walking in nature, going to forests, living by the sea, the South Downs or the rugged coastline of Cornwall all are part of her artistic process. It all adds to her fuel bank of emotion.

When Tina is not feeling inspired to paint, she tells us she can work with clay and vice versa.

Tina’s other passion is her gardening because gardening connects her to the earth.

The artist has two studios in her home. One for painting and the other for working on her ceramics. Her mediums are inks, acrylics and oils for her paintings and earthenware clay with tin glaze decorated with stains, oxides and over glaze for her ceramic art. Music and incense are indispensable in her art studio. Her taste in music is eclectic from reggae to opera.

Tina’s favourite artists are Monet, Van Gogh, Peter Doig for painting and for ceramics she admires John Maltby, Jane Muir, Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper

Art5: What words of wisdom would you pass unto your childhood self?

Tina Davies: My choices have bought me to this moment so I would change nothing.
